Cetylated Fatty Acids (CFAs) are a group of naturally occurring fatty acids, most often including cetyl myristoleate, that have been studied for their potential benefits in supporting joint health. Scientific evidence for their use comes primarily from small clinical studies and some animal research. Several randomized controlled trials have indicated that topical and oral supplementation with CFAs can improve joint function, mobility, and comfort, particularly in individuals with osteoarthritis of the knee. For example, a placebo-controlled study published in Journal of Rheumatology (2002) found that topical CFAs improved knee range of motion and decreased pain. Another study published in Clinical Interventions in Aging (2009) showed similar results, with subjects experiencing improved ability to perform daily activities.
The hypothesized mechanism of action is that CFAs may help lubricate cell membranes in the synovial lining of joints, supporting smooth movement and modulating local immune response. However, the body of evidence is still relatively limited in size and scope; most existing trials are small, and more large-scale, independent studies are needed to confirm long-term efficacy and safety. Overall, CFAs are justified for joint support by preliminary scientific evidence, but their use is not as strongly validated compared to more established interventions such as glucosamine or NSAIDs.
