Anemarrhena asphodeloides, known as Zhimu in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use primarily for its cooling and moistening properties. In TCM, it is commonly prescribed to "clear heat," "nourish yin," and address symptoms like fever, dryness, and irritability. While not primarily classified as a joint-specific remedy, it has been included in some formulas for arthritis or joint discomfort, particularly when these are believed to be associated with "heat" or "yin deficiency" patterns. Modern scientific research on Anemarrhena asphodeloides for joint health is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities of its key constituents, such as saponins (notably timosaponins). These properties theoretically could benefit joint health by reducing inflammation, but direct clinical evidence in humans is lacking. No robust human trials specifically support its use for joint disorders such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. Therefore, the use of Anemarrhena asphodeloides to support the joints is justified by traditional practices rather than scientific validation.
