Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Spanish Oregano (Lippia graveolens or Origanum vulgare in some regions) has a history of traditional use in various folk medicine systems, particularly in Latin America and the Mediterranean, for a variety of ailments, including digestive issues and liver complaints. The use of Spanish Oregano to support or treat jaundice in adults stems mainly from traditional herbal practices, where it has been employed as a cholagogue (to promote bile flow) and as a general liver tonic. However, the available evidence supporting its efficacy in treating jaundice is extremely limited and largely anecdotal. There are few, if any, well-designed clinical studies or robust pharmacological investigations that confirm its benefits specifically for jaundice or liver dysfunction in adults. Most references to its use for jaundice are found in ethnobotanical surveys or compilations of traditional remedies, rather than in scientific literature. Therefore, while Spanish Oregano may have been used traditionally for this purpose, current scientific validation is lacking, and the overall evidence supporting its use for jaundice is weak.
