Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Rhemannia (Rehmannia glutinosa), known as "Shu Di Huang" in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a long history of use in various herbal formulas aimed at supporting liver function and treating conditions categorized by TCM as "jaundice" (huang dan). In TCM, jaundice is understood as a manifestation of imbalances such as Damp-Heat or Blood deficiency affecting the liver, spleen, and gallbladder. Rhemannia is included in classic formulas like Yin Chen Hao Tang, which is used for jaundice accompanied by heat signs. While the herb is traditionally understood to nourish Yin and clear Heat, supporting the liver and kidney, there is limited direct scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness specifically for jaundice in adults. Most modern research on Rehmannia focuses on its potential for diabetes, inflammation, and kidney function, with few high-quality clinical trials addressing jaundice. Thus, while its use is justified by a substantial traditional record, current scientific validation is lacking or indirect. Medical use for jaundice should be guided by a healthcare professional, as modern causes of jaundice often require different interventions.
