Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Oroxylum indicum, commonly known as "Indian trumpet tree" or "Shyonaka," has a longstanding role in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for the management of liver disorders, including jaundice. Classical Ayurvedic texts such as the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita reference the use of Oroxylum bark as part of polyherbal formulations for treating "Kamala" (jaundice). These uses are primarily based on empirical knowledge and observations passed down through generations. In ethnomedicinal surveys across India and Southeast Asia, the decoction or extract of Oroxylum’s bark is frequently cited as a remedy for jaundice and related hepatic conditions.

Modern scientific studies on Oroxylum’s efficacy for jaundice are limited and mostly preclinical. Some animal studies suggest hepatoprotective effects, with extracts of Oroxylum indicum showing potential to reduce liver enzyme levels and histopathological damage in chemically-induced liver injury models. The flavonoids and baicalein present in Oroxylum are hypothesized to confer antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. However, high-quality clinical trials in humans are lacking, and thus, scientific validation remains insufficient at present. Most of the justification for its use in jaundice is traditional, supported by anecdotal and ethnobotanical reports rather than robust clinical data.
