Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Lovage (Levisticum officinale) has a long history of use in traditional European herbal medicine, particularly for urinary and digestive ailments. In some folk traditions, lovage was also considered beneficial for supporting liver health and treating jaundice, a condition characterized by yellowing of the skin and eyes due to elevated bilirubin levels, typically resulting from liver dysfunction. Historical herbal texts from Europe sometimes mention lovage as a so-called “blood purifier” or “liver tonic,” and it has been included in polyherbal formulas for jaundice or other hepatic disorders. However, these uses are based largely on empirical tradition and the herb’s reputation for stimulating digestion and urination, rather than on specific evidence of efficacy for jaundice itself.

There is currently little to no scientific research directly evaluating the effects of lovage on jaundice or liver function in humans or animals. Modern phytochemical analyses of lovage have identified compounds such as coumarins, phthalides, and essential oils, but none have been conclusively linked to hepatoprotective or anti-jaundice activities. No clinical trials exist to support the use of lovage in the management of jaundice. Therefore, while its use for jaundice can be traced to traditional herbal practices, there is minimal scientific validation, and evidence for efficacy is very weak (rated 1 out of 5).
