Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Javanese Turmeric (Curcuma xanthorrhiza), also known as Temulawak, has a long history of use in traditional Indonesian medicine (jamu) for various liver disorders, including jaundice in adults. The traditional rationale stems from its perceived ability to "cleanse" or support liver function and promote bile flow, which are key concerns in jaundice. Several traditional texts and ethnobotanical surveys document its use for hepatic complaints, but these are based on empirical use rather than rigorous scientific validation.

From a scientific standpoint, while there is preclinical evidence suggesting that extracts of Javanese Turmeric possess hepatoprotective, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties, these studies are mostly in vitro or in animal models. For example, some studies indicate that curcuminoids and xanthorrhizol, active compounds in the rhizome, may help protect liver cells from damage. However, direct clinical trials in humans specifically targeting jaundice are lacking or of low methodological quality. Thus, the evidence supporting its efficacy for treating jaundice in adults is limited and primarily rooted in tradition rather than robust clinical science.

In summary, while Javanese Turmeric is traditionally used for jaundice and has some suggestive preclinical data, there is insufficient scientific evidence to fully endorse its use for this condition in adults.
