Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Iridoid glycosides are a group of naturally occurring compounds found in several medicinal plants, such as Picrorhiza kurroa, Gardenia jasminoides, and species within the Gentianaceae family. In traditional systems of medicine, particularly Ayurveda and Chinese medicine, plants containing iridoid glycosides have been historically used to support liver function and treat jaundice in adults. For example, Picrorhiza kurroa (Kutki), rich in iridoid glycosides like picroside I and II, is well-documented in Ayurvedic texts as a remedy for jaundice and other hepatic ailments. Similarly, Gardenia jasminoides (Zhi Zi) is utilized in Traditional Chinese Medicine to "clear heat" and "relieve dampness," often interpreted as supporting liver health and managing jaundice-like conditions.

However, while these traditional uses are well recorded, robust scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of iridoid glycosides for jaundice is limited. Some preliminary pharmacological studies suggest potential hepatoprotective (liver-protecting) effects of iridoid glycosides in animal models, but high-quality clinical trials in humans are lacking. Therefore, the use of iridoid glycosides for jaundice treatment is primarily justified by traditional practice rather than scientific validation.
