Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Indian Nightshade (Solanum indicum) has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic and Siddha medicine systems in India, where it is known as "Kantakari." Traditionally, various parts of the plant have been employed for their purported hepatoprotective properties, and decoctions or extracts have been used in folk remedies to support liver function and manage conditions like jaundice. The rationale in these traditions is often based on the belief that Indian Nightshade helps to "cleanse" or "detoxify" the liver and alleviate symptoms of jaundice such as yellowing of the skin and eyes.

However, there is very limited scientific evidence to support these traditional uses. Some in vivo and in vitro studies on related Solanum species suggest possible antioxidant and hepatoprotective effects, but there is a lack of robust clinical trials specifically evaluating Indian Nightshade for jaundice in adults. Most of the data comes from animal studies or in vitro assays that cannot be directly translated to human efficacy or safety. As a result, while the traditional use is well-documented, scientific validation is minimal, and safety data in jaundiced adults is lacking.

In summary, Indian Nightshade’s use for jaundice is rooted in tradition, but current scientific evidence does not robustly validate its efficacy or safety for this purpose in adults.
