Evidence supporting the use of: Fumaria parviflora
For the health condition: Jaundice (adults)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Fumaria parviflora, commonly known as fineleaf fumitory, has a longstanding history of use in traditional medicine systems, especially in Ayurveda and Unani, for supporting liver health and treating jaundice in adults. The plant is known as "Pittapapra" in Ayurveda, where it is reputed for its supposed "liver-cleansing" and "blood-purifying" properties. In classical Unani texts, Fumaria species are described as effective for managing conditions associated with hepatic dysfunction, including jaundice, by purportedly stimulating bile flow and aiding in detoxification. Despite this traditional use, scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for jaundice is limited. Some preclinical studies suggest that extracts of Fumaria parviflora may exhibit hepatoprotective effects in animal models, showing reduced markers of liver injury and modest antioxidant activity. However, these studies are preliminary, often using animal subjects or in vitro systems, with a lack of robust clinical trials in humans. Furthermore, the exact bioactive compounds responsible for these effects are not clearly identified, and mechanisms of action remain speculative. In summary, the use of Fumaria parviflora for jaundice is primarily based on traditional knowledge, with some weak supportive evidence from laboratory studies. There is a need for well-designed human clinical trials to establish its safety and effectiveness in the treatment of jaundice.
