Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

European Vervain (Verbena officinalis) has a long history of use in traditional European herbal medicine for a variety of ailments, including conditions affecting the liver such as jaundice. Historical texts and herbal compendia, such as those from the Middle Ages and Renaissance, reference the use of vervain as a "liver tonic" and for treating "obstructions of the liver"—which was a common way of describing jaundice and related symptoms in pre-modern medical terminology. Nicholas Culpeper's 17th-century herbal, for example, mentions vervain as beneficial for the liver and jaundice. However, the evidence for this use is almost entirely anecdotal and based on traditional knowledge; there are no robust clinical trials or modern pharmacological studies that substantiate the efficacy of vervain for treating jaundice in adults. Modern research on Verbena officinalis has focused on its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and mild sedative properties, with little to no direct investigation into hepatic or cholestatic conditions. Therefore, while vervain's use for jaundice is well-documented in traditional European herbalism, it is not supported by contemporary scientific evidence or guidelines. Caution is advised, as jaundice can be a symptom of serious underlying disease, and reliance on traditional remedies alone is not recommended.
