Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Daylily (Hemerocallis fulva) has been traditionally used in East Asian herbal medicine, particularly in Chinese medicine, as a remedy for jaundice and liver-related conditions. Historical texts, such as the Shennong Bencao Jing (Divine Farmer's Materia Medica), mention daylily as having properties that "clear heat" and "resolve dampness," concepts often associated with conditions like jaundice in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The plant is believed to promote bile secretion and diuresis, which are thought to help in conditions characterized by yellowish skin or eyes, typical of jaundice. However, scientific validation for these uses is limited. There are a few animal studies suggesting possible hepatoprotective effects, but these are preliminary and do not directly address jaundice in humans. No high-quality clinical trials have demonstrated the efficacy or safety of daylily for treating jaundice in adults. As such, its use for this indication is best described as traditional, with a moderate historical rationale but low scientific evidence. In summary, while daylily has a longstanding role in traditional medicine for jaundice, this is not currently supported by robust modern clinical data.
