Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Chinese Silkvine (Periploca sepium) has been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for various ailments, including jaundice. In TCM, jaundice is often interpreted as an imbalance related to dampness and heat affecting the liver and gallbladder, and silkvine is considered to have properties that dispel wind-dampness and promote the flow of qi. Historical texts such as the "Chinese Pharmacopoeia" and classic formulas include silkvine (known as xiānɡ jià pí) as a component in herbal combinations intended to treat symptoms resembling jaundice. However, the evidence supporting its use is based primarily on traditional practice and case reports, not on systematic scientific validation.

Modern pharmacological studies on Chinese silkvine have focused mainly on its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and immunomodulatory effects, with very limited research directly related to jaundice or liver function. No high-quality clinical trials or robust preclinical data specifically support its efficacy for treating jaundice in adults. Therefore, while Chinese silkvine is historically used for this condition in TCM, the scientific evidence remains minimal and largely anecdotal.
