Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Chinese Mallow (Malva verticillata, also called "Dong Kui Zi" in Traditional Chinese Medicine) has a longstanding history of use in East Asian herbal medicine for various ailments, including support for liver health and jaundice. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), jaundice is often believed to result from "damp-heat" in the liver and gallbladder, and Chinese Mallow is classified as a cooling and dampness-draining herb. Historical texts, such as the "Compendium of Materia Medica" (Bencao Gangmu), mention its use to promote urination, clear heat, and relieve edema and jaundice.

Despite its frequent traditional use, scientific evidence supporting Chinese Mallow for jaundice in adults is limited. Pharmacological studies have focused mostly on its diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, but direct clinical trials or modern studies specifically investigating its efficacy for jaundice are lacking. Thus, while traditional herbalists may recommend Chinese Mallow for supporting liver function and addressing symptoms of jaundice, this practice is justified by historical use rather than robust scientific validation.
