Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Buckthorn Plantain (commonly referring to Plantago lanceolata or sometimes Frangula alnus/"Buckthorn") has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine. In various folk traditions, especially European and Middle Eastern, plantain species and buckthorn bark were used as remedies for liver ailments, including jaundice. However, this use is primarily based on anecdotal or empirical tradition rather than documented scientific efficacy.

Specifically, Frangula alnus (Alder Buckthorn) bark has been used as a mild laxative, and some traditional herbalists believed that stimulating bowel movements could help the liver and thus alleviate jaundice symptoms. Similarly, Plantain species were sometimes included in polyherbal remedies for "cleansing the blood" or supporting liver function, but not as a primary treatment for jaundice.

There is very limited scientific evidence to support the efficacy of Buckthorn Plantain for treating jaundice in adults. Modern clinical studies or pharmacological research validating its use for this condition are lacking. Most medical guidelines do not recommend it for jaundice.

In summary, while there is a traditional basis for the use of Buckthorn Plantain in support of jaundice, there is minimal direct evidence for efficacy, and scientific validation is absent. The rating reflects reliance on tradition with little to no supporting scientific data.
