Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Borassus palm (Borassus flabellifer), also known as the palmyra palm, has a long-standing place in traditional medicine systems, particularly in South and Southeast Asia. In Ayurveda, Siddha, and various folk medicinal practices, different parts of the Borassus palm—such as the fruit, sap, and roots—have been used for a variety of ailments, including jaundice. The rationale for its use in jaundice often centers around its presumed cooling properties and its role as a diuretic, which are believed to help "cleanse" the body and support liver function. Some traditional texts and ethnobotanical surveys report its administration (often as a decoction or juice) to individuals with symptoms of jaundice.

However, scientific validation remains limited. There are a few animal studies suggesting that extracts from Borassus flabellifer may exhibit antioxidant or hepatoprotective effects, but these are not specific to jaundice, and clinical trials in humans are lacking. The evidence for efficacy is thus primarily anecdotal and historical rather than based on rigorous scientific investigation. Therefore, while its use is established in tradition, the quality and quantity of scientific evidence supporting Borassus palm for jaundice in adults is low.
