Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) has a long-standing history in traditional European herbal medicine, where its fruits, flowers, and bark have been used for a variety of ailments, including digestive issues and as a "blood purifier." Specifically, for jaundice, historical texts and folk medicine sources sometimes mention blackthorn as part of remedies intended to support liver function and alleviate symptoms related to jaundice, mostly through infusions or decoctions of the flowers or bark. However, there is a lack of robust scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for treating jaundice in adults. No well-conducted clinical trials or pharmacological studies have validated its use for this purpose. Contemporary herbal monographs, such as those by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and German Commission E, do not list blackthorn as an evidence-based treatment for jaundice. Any support for its use in jaundice is based on tradition rather than scientific validation, and the overall evidence for its effectiveness in this context is weak, meriting a low rating for evidence.
