Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bile salts have a scientific basis for use in certain cases of jaundice, particularly in adults with cholestatic liver diseases or conditions where bile flow is impaired. Jaundice itself is a symptom characterized by yellowing of the skin and eyes due to elevated bilirubin levels. In adults, jaundice can arise from a variety of causes, including liver disease, bile duct obstruction, or hemolysis. While not a universal treatment for all causes of jaundice, bile salts (such as ursodeoxycholic acid, UDCA) are commonly used in specific types of cholestatic jaundice, including primary biliary cholangitis and some cases of intrahepatic cholestasis. Numerous clinical studies and guidelines support the use of UDCA for improving bile flow, reducing bilirubin levels, and alleviating symptoms in these contexts (e.g., Lindor KD et al., Hepatology, 2009; European Association for the Study of the Liver, 2017). However, for jaundice caused by acute hepatitis, hemolysis, or mechanical obstruction, bile salts are not indicated and may be ineffective or even harmful. The overall evidence is moderate (hence the rating of 2), as the benefit is limited to specific subtypes of jaundice and not to the symptom as a whole. There is little evidence supporting the use of generic or unspecified bile salts for general jaundice outside these specific indications.
