Evidence supporting the use of: Bergenia
For the health condition: Jaundice (adults)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Bergenia, particularly species such as Bergenia ciliata and Bergenia ligulata, has a long history of use in traditional systems of medicine like Ayurveda and folk medicine in India and surrounding regions. In these traditions, Bergenia is considered to have hepatoprotective properties and is sometimes used as part of polyherbal formulations to support liver function and treat conditions such as jaundice. The rationale is based on its perceived ability to clear toxins and support bile flow. However, there is a lack of robust scientific studies or clinical trials directly investigating Bergenia’s effect on jaundice or liver function in humans. While some preclinical research suggests antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities in Bergenia extracts, these findings are preliminary and not specific to jaundice. No high-quality human data is available to confirm efficacy or safety for this indication. Therefore, the use of Bergenia for jaundice is primarily justified by traditional practices, with very limited scientific support.
