Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Arani (Premna integrifolia), known in Ayurveda as Agnimantha or Arani, is traditionally used in Indian medicine for a variety of ailments, including liver disorders such as jaundice. Classical Ayurvedic texts mention the use of Arani in formulations (such as Dashamoola) for its purported hepatoprotective and detoxifying properties. The rationale in traditional practice is based on the herb’s supposed ability to "strengthen agni" (digestive fire), support bile flow, and alleviate symptoms associated with liver dysfunction. However, scientific studies validating its effectiveness for jaundice in adults are extremely limited. There are a handful of preclinical studies that suggest potential antioxidant and hepatoprotective effects of extracts from Premna integrifolia in animal models of liver injury, but these do not directly address jaundice, nor are there robust clinical trials in humans. Therefore, while its use is rooted in tradition and supported by historical medical literature, current scientific evidence is minimal and not sufficient for clinical recommendation. Caution is warranted, and further research is necessary to establish safety and efficacy for this indication.
