Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Angelica archangelica, commonly known as garden angelica, has a long history of use in traditional European herbal medicine. Historically, the roots and seeds of Angelica archangelica have been used to treat various digestive and liver-related ailments, including jaundice in adults. This traditional application is rooted in the belief that the plant's bitter compounds and essential oils stimulate bile flow and digestive processes, which was thought to support liver function and help clear jaundice. However, these uses are largely anecdotal and based on pre-modern understandings of disease.

Despite its historical use, there is a lack of robust scientific evidence to support the efficacy of Angelica archangelica for treating jaundice. Few, if any, controlled clinical trials or pharmacological studies have specifically examined its impact on jaundice or the underlying causes of hyperbilirubinemia. Most references to Angelica archangelica for jaundice are found in traditional herbal texts and ethnobotanical records, not in peer-reviewed scientific literature. Therefore, while the use of Angelica archangelica for jaundice is justified by tradition, the scientific support for this practice is minimal, and it should not be considered a validated or reliable treatment for jaundice in adults.
