Evidence supporting the use of: Aloe vera
For the health condition: Jaundice (adults)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Aloe vera has been traditionally used in some herbal medicine systems for liver-related ailments, including jaundice. In Ayurveda and various folk medicine traditions, the juice or pulp of aloe vera has been administered as a remedy thought to "cool" the body and support liver function. The rationale is largely based on the concept that aloe vera possesses detoxifying and anti-inflammatory properties, which could theoretically benefit liver health. However, scientific research specifically investigating aloe vera’s efficacy in treating or supporting jaundice in adults is scarce. Most studies on aloe vera focus on its dermatological or digestive benefits, and there is little clinical evidence demonstrating hepatoprotective effects in humans with jaundice. In animal studies, some hepatoprotective effects have been observed, but these findings are preliminary and not directly translatable to jaundice management in humans. Furthermore, the use of aloe vera can sometimes pose risks to liver health, especially in cases of excessive or prolonged consumption, as some cases of aloe-induced hepatotoxicity have been reported. In summary, while aloe vera’s use for jaundice is rooted in traditional practice, current scientific evidence does not robustly support its efficacy or safety for this indication.
