Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Aloe, particularly Aloe vera, has been used in various traditional medicine systems for liver ailments, including jaundice, especially in Ayurveda and some folk medicine practices. The rationale in these systems is often based on Aloe's perceived "cooling" and "detoxifying" properties, and its use as a purgative to clear obstructions in the liver and biliary tract. However, there is very limited modern scientific evidence to support the use of Aloe for treating jaundice in adults. Most research on Aloe focuses on its topical use for skin conditions or its effects on constipation. Some animal studies suggest potential hepatoprotective effects of Aloe extracts, but these are preliminary and do not directly address jaundice. In fact, Aloe (especially the latex component) can be hepatotoxic if used inappropriately, which raises safety concerns. Major clinical guidelines do not endorse Aloe as a treatment for jaundice. Therefore, while Aloe's use for jaundice is rooted in traditional practice, evidence supporting its efficacy and safety for this purpose is minimal, and its use is not recommended in evidence-based medicine.
