Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Aerva lanata, commonly known as mountain knotgrass or "Poonai meenji" in traditional Indian medicine, has been widely used in Ayurveda, Siddha, and folk medicine systems for supporting liver health and treating jaundice in adults. The plant is traditionally believed to possess hepatoprotective, diuretic, and anti-inflammatory properties. Its use for jaundice is primarily based on these traditional systems, where decoctions of the leaves or whole plant are administered to patients. Several ethnobotanical surveys and compilations of traditional remedies in India have documented its use for managing jaundice (e.g., Manandhar, 2002; Jain, 1991).

While there are a few preliminary animal studies suggesting that Aerva lanata extracts may have hepatoprotective effects (e.g., reducing liver enzyme levels in chemically-induced liver injury in rats), strong clinical evidence in humans is lacking. The mechanism of action is not well elucidated, and the studies available are limited in scale and quality. The majority of its use for jaundice is therefore based on longstanding traditional practice rather than robust scientific validation. As such, its evidence rating for this indication is moderate for traditional use (2/5), with scientific validation still insufficient for recommendation based on clinical trial data.
