Achyranthes (commonly Achyranthes aspera) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly Ayurveda and folk medicine in India, for supporting liver health and treating conditions like jaundice. The roots, leaves, and seeds of Achyranthes aspera are used in various decoctions and formulations for their purported hepatoprotective (liver-protecting) properties. Ethnomedicinal surveys and traditional literature often cite its use for "Kamala" (jaundice) and other liver disorders. However, scientific validation for its effectiveness in jaundice is limited.

In terms of modern research, some animal studies have indicated that Achyranthes aspera extracts may have protective effects against chemically induced liver damage, showing decreased serum bilirubin and liver enzymes in animal models. The proposed mechanism is due to the plant's antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Despite these findings, there are no robust clinical trials or substantial human studies to firmly establish its efficacy or safety for treating jaundice in adults. Therefore, the use of Achyranthes for jaundice is primarily justified by traditional practice rather than by strong scientific evidence.
