Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Abrus, most commonly referring to Abrus precatorius (commonly known as rosary pea or jequirity), has a history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Unani. In these systems, various parts of the plant (notably leaves and roots) have been used to treat a range of ailments, including jaundice in adults. The rationale for its use is rooted in traditional beliefs regarding its purported detoxifying and hepatoprotective properties. However, the evidence supporting its effectiveness for jaundice is primarily anecdotal or based on traditional texts rather than robust clinical research.

There are very limited scientific studies on the use of Abrus precatorius for jaundice. The plant is most well-known for containing abrin, a highly toxic protein, which limits its safe medicinal application. Some animal studies have explored possible hepatoprotective effects of extracts from less toxic parts of the plant, but these are preliminary and not directly linked to jaundice treatment in humans. No high-quality clinical trials exist to validate its efficacy for this purpose. Therefore, while its use is documented in traditional medicine, the overall evidence is weak and does not meet modern scientific standards for safety or efficacy in the management of jaundice.
