Evidence supporting the use of: Camphor
For the health condition: Itching Ears
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Camphor has traditionally been used in various cultures as a remedy for skin irritation, mild itching, and inflammation due to its cooling and counterirritant properties. In the context of itching ears, camphor is sometimes included in ear drops or home remedies, particularly in South Asia and parts of the Middle East. The rationale is that camphor produces a cooling sensation which may temporarily mask or relieve the feeling of itchiness. However, scientific evidence supporting the efficacy and safety of camphor for treating itching specifically in the ears is scarce. Most available data pertain to its topical use on intact skin, where it has been shown to act as a mild anesthetic and antipruritic agent. Importantly, camphor can be toxic if ingested or applied inappropriately, especially to mucous membranes or damaged skin, and its use in the ear canal can potentially cause irritation, allergic reactions, or even ototoxicity. Modern otolaryngology does not recommend camphor for ear complaints due to safety concerns and lack of robust clinical evidence. Thus, while its use for itching ears is rooted in traditional practices, the scientific support is minimal, and caution is advised.
