Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Australian Sandalwood (Santalum spicatum) has a history of traditional use among Indigenous Australians and, to a lesser extent, in Western herbal practices for a variety of skin conditions, including minor irritations and inflammation. The oil from sandalwood has been used in topical preparations, often for its perceived soothing and anti-inflammatory properties. Some anecdotal reports and traditional remedies suggest the use of sandalwood oil for ear discomfort, such as itching, likely due to its emollient and calming effects on the skin. However, there is little to no scientific evidence specifically validating the use of Australian Sandalwood for treating itching ears. Most published research on sandalwood focuses on its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and fragrance applications, with few studies examining its effects in the context of ear health or pruritus (itching) of the ear canal. Thus, while traditional use exists and may account for some inclusion in herbal or natural remedies for ear itching, the overall evidence remains weak and largely anecdotal, lacking rigorous clinical trials or pharmacological studies directly supporting this application.
