Evidence supporting the use of: Rugose Rose
For the health condition: Itching
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Rugose Rose (Rosa rugosa) has been used in traditional East Asian medicine, particularly in Chinese and Korean herbal practices. Its petals and fruits (rose hips) have been incorporated into formulations intended to soothe the skin and alleviate mild itching or irritation. The traditional rationale is based on the plant’s purported "cooling" and anti-inflammatory properties, and its inclusion in poultices or washes for minor skin discomforts. However, scientific studies specifically investigating Rosa rugosa for the treatment of itching are lacking. Most available research on Rugose Rose focuses on its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, or antimicrobial effects, with some in vitro and animal studies suggesting these activities could plausibly benefit irritated skin. Nevertheless, direct clinical evidence for its efficacy in treating pruritus (itching) in humans is absent. As a result, its use for itching is primarily justified by traditional practice rather than robust scientific validation, and the overall strength of evidence supporting this application is weak.
