Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Red Sandalwood (Pterocarpus santalinus) has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic and other traditional systems of medicine in India for various skin issues, including itching. In these systems, Red Sandalwood is often included in topical preparations, pastes, or decoctions purported to soothe itching, inflammation, and other dermatological complaints. The rationale is largely based on its described cooling, anti-inflammatory, and blood-purifying properties in traditional texts. However, scientific validation for these uses is limited. Only a few in vitro and animal studies have explored the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of Red Sandalwood extracts, but direct studies on its efficacy for treating pruritus (itching) in humans are lacking. Thus, while its use for itching is historically rooted and still popular in traditional medicine, there is insufficient clinical evidence to fully endorse its effectiveness according to modern scientific standards.
