Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Polypodium species, particularly Polypodium leucotomos, have a history of traditional use in various cultures for treating dermatological conditions, including itching (pruritus). The use of Polypodium in traditional medicine is most commonly documented in Central and South America, where extracts from the rhizome have been employed to address skin ailments such as psoriasis, eczema, and other inflammatory skin disorders that may involve itching as a symptom. However, while there is a traditional precedent for its application in pruritic conditions, the direct evidence supporting its efficacy specifically for itching is limited and largely anecdotal.

Scientific studies on Polypodium leucotomos have focused mainly on its photoprotective and antioxidant properties, especially in the context of preventing sun damage and managing conditions like vitiligo and melasma. Some small clinical studies suggest benefits in reducing inflammation and skin damage, which could conceivably translate to reduced itching in some inflammatory skin diseases. Nevertheless, robust clinical trials directly evaluating its anti-pruritic effects are lacking. As such, while there is a traditional basis for its use in itching, the scientific evidence remains weak and indirect.
