Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Dragon's Blood is a term used for the red resin obtained from various plant species, most commonly from the genera Daemonorops, Dracaena, Croton, and Pterocarpus. Traditionally, Dragon's Blood has been used in various cultures for its purported healing properties, including as a topical remedy for skin ailments such as wounds, ulcers, and itching. Historical records, particularly in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurvedic medicine, and certain folk medical practices in South America, cite its use as an anti-inflammatory and antipruritic (anti-itch) agent. The resin was commonly applied to the skin to relieve irritation, accelerate wound healing, and reduce inflammation.
However, while there are some laboratory studies indicating that Dragon's Blood may possess anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, direct scientific validation specifically for its efficacy in treating itching (pruritus) in humans is limited. Most available evidence is anecdotal or based on traditional use, rather than on well-designed clinical trials. Thus, the use of Dragon's Blood for itching is primarily justified by tradition, with only modest supporting evidence from in vitro or animal studies regarding its general anti-inflammatory effects.
