Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Cyperus species, particularly Cyperus rotundus (also known as nutgrass or musta), have a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and Unani. In Ayurveda, Cyperus is considered "tikta" (bitter) and "katu" (pungent) and is used to pacify conditions associated with "pitta" dosha, which often includes symptoms like itching (pruritus), skin rashes, and inflammation. Traditional formulations sometimes include Cyperus as a component intended to alleviate skin irritation and itching, either in topical preparations or as an internal remedy.

However, there is limited scientific research directly validating the use of Cyperus species for the treatment of itching. Some studies have described the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of Cyperus extracts, which could theoretically contribute to relief from itching, but there is a lack of robust clinical trials specifically assessing its efficacy for pruritus in humans. Most available evidence for its antipruritic use comes from ethnobotanical surveys and traditional pharmacopoeias rather than controlled studies. In summary, Cyperus is traditionally used for itching, but scientific validation remains modest and largely indirect.
