Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Citronella, an essential oil derived from Cymbopogon species (lemongrass), has traditionally been used in some cultures for its insect-repellent properties and as a folk remedy for itching and other minor skin irritations. The rationale is largely anecdotal: citronella oil is sometimes applied topically to soothe insect bites, with the expectation that its mild anti-inflammatory or cooling effects might reduce itching. However, there is minimal scientific evidence to substantiate these claims. While citronella does have recognized insect-repellent properties and some antimicrobial activity, studies directly examining its effectiveness as an antipruritic (anti-itch) agent are lacking. Most published research focuses on its use as a mosquito repellent, with very few clinical or laboratory studies addressing its effects on itching or skin inflammation. Additionally, citronella oil can sometimes cause skin irritation or allergic reactions, which may worsen itching in sensitive individuals. Thus, while its use for itching is rooted in traditional practice, it is not strongly supported by scientific research, and caution should be exercised when applying undiluted essential oils to the skin.
