Catechu, also known as "cutch," is a plant extract derived from the heartwood of Acacia catechu. Its use in the treatment of itching (pruritus) is primarily rooted in traditional medicine systems, particularly Ayurveda and Unani. In these traditions, catechu has been applied topically or used in preparations for its reputed astringent, cooling, and anti-inflammatory properties. Ancient texts describe its use to alleviate various skin ailments, including itching, rashes, and minor wounds, often as part of a paste or ointment. However, scientific evidence supporting catechu’s effectiveness for itching is limited. Some studies have explored the extract’s antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, which are relevant to skin health, but direct clinical trials assessing its efficacy against itching in humans are lacking. The astringent action may help in drying out oozing or weeping lesions, which could provide symptomatic relief in certain skin conditions, but this is inferred rather than proven in controlled studies. Thus, while catechu remains a popular remedy in traditional medicine for itching and related skin discomfort, its use is not strongly validated by modern scientific research. Most of the evidence comes from historical usage and traditional practices rather than rigorous clinical evaluation.
