Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Baliospermum montanum, commonly known as "Danti" in Ayurveda, is traditionally used in Indian medicine for various dermatological conditions, including itching (pruritus). The root and seed extracts have been referenced in classical Ayurvedic texts such as the "Charaka Samhita" and "Bhavaprakasha Nighantu" for their use in treating skin diseases, particularly those associated with itching and other symptoms like eczema and ringworm. The traditional rationale is based on the plant's reputed "kusthaghna" (anti-skin disease) and "krimighna" (anti-parasitic) properties, which are believed to help clear skin eruptions and alleviate associated discomfort like itching. However, scientific validation for this specific use is limited. While some phytochemical studies have identified the presence of diterpenes, flavonoids, and other bioactive compounds in Baliospermum, there are very few modern pharmacological studies directly evaluating its anti-pruritic (anti-itching) effects. Most available scientific literature focuses on its purgative, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial activities. As a result, the evidence supporting its use for itching primarily rests on longstanding traditional use rather than robust clinical or experimental data. In summary, Baliospermum's use for itching is justified by traditional practice, but there is a clear need for more targeted scientific research to substantiate these claims.
