Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Avens (Geum urbanum), also known as herb Bennet, has a history of traditional use in European herbal medicine, primarily for digestive issues, sore throat, and wound healing. Its use for treating or supporting relief from itching (pruritus) is based on traditional herbal practices rather than robust scientific validation. Some historical texts and folk medicine sources suggest Avens was included in topical applications for skin irritations, which may incidentally involve itching. The plant contains tannins and other astringent compounds, which could theoretically reduce inflammation or soothe minor skin discomfort when applied externally. However, there are no significant clinical studies or pharmacological investigations specifically supporting Avens for itching. The evidence, therefore, is limited to anecdotal and traditional references, with no modern research affirming its effectiveness or clarifying its mechanism for this indication. If Avens is used for itching, it is primarily justified by tradition, and current scientific evidence is lacking.
