Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Atlantic Cedar (Cedrus atlantica) has a history of traditional use in various cultures, particularly in North Africa and the Middle East, where its essential oil and other preparations have been used for skin conditions, including itching. Traditional herbal medicine texts sometimes mention cedarwood oil as an ingredient in topical remedies for dermatological issues due to its purported anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. However, clinical or pharmacological evidence specifically supporting the use of Atlantic Cedar for pruritus (itching) is extremely limited or absent. The existing documentation is primarily anecdotal or based on general use for skin health rather than targeted studies on itching. Some laboratory studies have explored the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities of cedarwood essential oil components, but these do not directly translate to efficacy for itching in humans. Therefore, while there is some traditional precedent for its inclusion in topical treatments for skin discomfort, current scientific validation for Atlantic Cedar’s effectiveness against itching is minimal, and its use is not supported by robust clinical evidence.
