Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Arisaema erubescens, also known as "Cobra Lily," has a long history of use in traditional medicine, especially in Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine. The tuber of Arisaema species is sometimes used for various inflammatory conditions, including skin disorders that may involve itching. However, the justification for its use to support or treat itching is based almost entirely on tradition rather than robust scientific evidence. Traditional texts describe its use for "pruritus" (itching), swelling, and other dermatological complaints, often as part of complex polyherbal formulations and after specific detoxification processes, since the raw plant contains irritating and toxic compounds such as calcium oxalate crystals. There are currently no high-quality clinical trials or pharmacological studies specifically validating its efficacy for itching in humans. Additionally, improper use can cause irritation and toxicity, which raises concerns about its safety profile. Therefore, while the traditional use exists and is documented in ethnobotanical and Ayurvedic literature, the actual evidence for its effectiveness in treating itching is minimal and not scientifically established.
