Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Arani (Premna serratifolia), known in Ayurveda and other traditional systems of medicine, has been used for various ailments, including skin disorders. Its use for treating itching (pruritus) is primarily based on traditional knowledge rather than robust scientific validation. In Ayurveda, Arani is considered to have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, and formulations containing its bark or leaves are sometimes applied topically or ingested to alleviate skin conditions that may involve itching, such as eczema or dermatitis.

However, scientific studies specifically evaluating Arani for the treatment of itching are sparse. A few phytochemical investigations suggest that the plant contains compounds such as flavonoids and alkaloids, which might possess anti-inflammatory or antipruritic effects, but direct clinical evidence is lacking. Most of the available references to its use for itching are found in Ayurvedic texts and ethnobotanical surveys, not in peer-reviewed scientific literature. Thus, while tradition supports its use, the evidence remains weak (rated 1), pending more rigorous pharmacological and clinical studies.
