Evidence supporting the use of: Propionibacterium freudenreichii shermanii
For the health condition: Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Propionibacterium freudenreichii subsp. shermanii is a probiotic bacterium primarily known for its role in Swiss-type cheese fermentation. In recent years, there has been emerging scientific interest in its potential benefits for gastrointestinal health, including the management of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Limited clinical and preclinical studies suggest that P. freudenreichii may exert anti-inflammatory effects and positively influence gut microbiota composition. For example, animal studies have demonstrated its ability to modulate immune responses and reduce gut inflammation. Small-scale human trials and in vitro experiments have shown that P. freudenreichii can produce short-chain fatty acids, such as propionate, which may support gut barrier function and reduce symptoms related to IBS, such as bloating and discomfort.
However, the clinical evidence specific to IBS is sparse and not as robust as for other probiotics like Lactobacillus or Bifidobacterium species. Most human trials examining P. freudenreichii involve mixed probiotic formulations, making it difficult to attribute observed benefits solely to this strain. As such, while there is preliminary scientific interest and some mechanistic rationale, the overall evidence base remains weak and is rated as 2 out of 5. More large-scale, well-controlled clinical trials are needed to confirm efficacy and establish clear recommendations for the use of P. freudenreichii in IBS management.
