Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Locust Bean Gum (LBG), also known as carob bean gum, is a natural polysaccharide derived from the seeds of the carob tree. Its use in supporting and treating Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is primarily backed by scientific evidence, particularly in the context of childhood and infant functional gastrointestinal disorders. LBG is a soluble fiber and acts as a thickening agent when added to foods or formulas. Scientific studies have shown that soluble fibers, in general, can improve stool consistency, reduce diarrhea, and alleviate constipation, which are symptoms often associated with IBS.

Specifically, LBG has been studied for its prebiotic properties, meaning it can support the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. Several clinical trials have demonstrated that LBG supplementation in infant formulas reduces the frequency of regurgitation and improves stool patterns without adverse effects. In adults, while there is less direct research specifically targeting IBS, studies on soluble fibers similar to LBG suggest potential benefits in symptom management, such as decreased bloating and improved regularity.

However, the overall quality of evidence is moderate. Research on LBG for IBS in adults is limited, and most recommendations are extrapolated from its general effects as a soluble fiber or from pediatric populations. It is not considered a first-line therapy for IBS, but as a dietary fiber, it may offer some benefits, especially for those with constipation-predominant IBS. More large-scale, well-designed clinical trials are needed to fully establish its efficacy in adult IBS management.
