Evidence supporting the use of: Isomalto-oligosaccharide
For the health condition: Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Isomalto-oligosaccharide (IMO) is a type of prebiotic fiber that has been studied for its effects on gut health, including potential benefits in Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). The scientific evidence supporting its use for IBS is limited but emerging. IMOs are resistant to digestion in the upper gastrointestinal tract and reach the colon intact, where they are fermented by beneficial gut bacteria. This fermentation process can promote the growth of probiotics such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli, which may help modulate gut microbiota and improve intestinal health.
A few small-scale human studies and animal models have indicated that IMO supplementation may improve stool consistency and frequency in individuals with mild digestive disturbances. However, direct studies on IBS populations are sparse, and those that exist often include IMO as one of several prebiotics or fibers being tested, making it difficult to isolate its effects. Some studies report mild improvements in bloating and abdominal pain, but others caution that IMOs can cause increased gas and discomfort in sensitive individuals, particularly those with IBS who may already be prone to symptoms from fermentable fibers (FODMAPs).
Overall, while there is a plausible mechanism and preliminary evidence suggesting that IMO could help support gut health, the direct clinical evidence specifically for IBS is limited and not robust. More targeted, well-designed clinical trials are needed to determine its efficacy and safety for IBS management.
