Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Galactomannan, a soluble fiber found in guar gum and other plant sources, has been studied for its potential benefits in managing Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Scientific evidence for its use primarily comes from randomized controlled trials and clinical studies evaluating fiber supplementation in IBS patients. Soluble fibers, such as galactomannan, are thought to have prebiotic effects, improving gut microbiota composition, stool consistency, and bowel regularity. Several studies have demonstrated that partially hydrolyzed guar gum (a form of galactomannan) can reduce IBS symptoms, including bloating, abdominal pain, and irregular bowel movements. For example, a 2006 double-blind study (Mizuta et al., World J Gastroenterol) found that partially hydrolyzed guar gum improved global symptom scores in IBS patients. A 2016 review (Ford et al., Am J Gastroenterol) concluded that soluble fibers in general, including galactomannan, are more effective than insoluble fibers for IBS symptom relief. However, the magnitude of benefit is moderate, and individual responses may vary. Adverse effects are generally mild, mainly related to bloating and gas. Overall, while not universally effective, there is moderate scientific evidence supporting the use of galactomannan as a dietary intervention for IBS, particularly as part of a broader dietary and lifestyle approach.
