Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Brassica oleracea, particularly in the form of a patented extract known as Brassica oleracea gemmifera (young broccoli sprouts) or as standardized broccoli seed/sprout extracts, has been investigated for its potential benefits in Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). The scientific rationale is based largely on its glucosinolate content, especially sulforaphane, which has been shown to possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties. Several small-scale clinical studies and preclinical models suggest that sulforaphane may modulate gut microbiota, reduce low-grade inflammation, and improve gut barrier function—all factors implicated in IBS pathology.

A few randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials have reported improvements in symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and stool consistency among IBS patients taking broccoli sprout extract. For example, a 2019 study (Yoo et al., World Journal of Gastroenterology) showed that a 4-week supplementation with broccoli sprout extract significantly improved IBS symptom severity and quality of life compared to placebo. However, these studies are limited by small sample sizes and short durations.

While traditional uses of Brassica oleracea vegetables (cabbage, broccoli, etc.) have focused more on general digestive health rather than specific IBS treatment, recent scientific attention has provided preliminary but promising evidence for their role in IBS management. Larger and longer-term studies are needed to establish robust efficacy and safety.
