Bifidobacteria, a genus of beneficial gut bacteria, are commonly used as probiotics in the management of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Scientific evidence supports their use, though the strength of evidence is moderate. Multiple randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and meta-analyses have investigated the efficacy of specific Bifidobacterium strains, such as Bifidobacterium infantis 35624, in alleviating IBS symptoms. Some studies have shown that supplementation can improve symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain, and irregular bowel habits, likely by modulating gut microbiota, reducing low-grade inflammation, and influencing gut-brain interactions.
For example, a well-cited RCT published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology (Whorwell et al., 2006) found that B. infantis 35624 significantly improved overall IBS symptoms compared to placebo. Subsequent reviews and meta-analyses (Ford et al., 2018, Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics) have concluded that certain Bifidobacteria-containing probiotics are more effective than placebo for global IBS symptom relief, though the benefit is generally modest and strain-specific. Not all Bifidobacteria strains have shown benefit, and heterogeneity among studies remains a limitation.
In summary, there is scientific validation for the use of certain Bifidobacteria strains in supporting IBS symptom management, but the effect sizes are moderate and not all strains are effective. More high-quality research is needed to clarify optimal strains, dosages, and patient subgroups.
