Evidence supporting the use of: Sweet Orange alcohol
For the health condition: Irritability
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis) essential oil and its extracts, including those in alcohol-based tinctures, have a long history of use in traditional medicine systems for promoting relaxation and alleviating mood disturbances such as irritability. In traditional aromatherapy and herbal practices, Sweet Orange is believed to have calming and uplifting properties, often used to ease tension, irritability, and mild anxiety. The pleasant citrus scent is thought to have a soothing effect on the mind.
From a scientific perspective, there is some preliminary evidence from small studies and animal models suggesting that components of Sweet Orange oil, such as limonene, may have mild anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) and mood-improving effects. Inhalation studies in humans have shown reductions in subjective anxiety and improvements in mood, but these studies are generally small and do not specifically address irritability as a symptom. There is little to no research specifically on Sweet Orange alcohol tinctures or extracts taken internally for irritability.
In summary, the use of Sweet Orange alcohol to support or treat irritability is primarily rooted in traditional use, with some low-level scientific data suggesting possible mood benefits. However, robust clinical evidence for its efficacy specifically for irritability is lacking.
