Evidence supporting the use of: Linden
For the health condition: Irritability
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Linden (Tilia spp.), also known as lime flower, has a long-standing history in traditional European herbal medicine for its calming and soothing effects. Historically, linden infusions or teas have been used to treat symptoms such as nervous tension, anxiety, restlessness, and mild irritability. The flowers and bracts contain volatile oils, flavonoids, and mucilaginous compounds thought to promote relaxation and reduce mild stress-related symptoms. However, scientific studies directly investigating the efficacy of linden specifically for irritability are sparse. Most of the available evidence is based on traditional use, anecdotal reports, and a few small studies suggesting mild sedative and anxiolytic properties. No large, rigorous clinical trials confirm its effectiveness for irritability in particular. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) acknowledges the traditional use of linden for relief of mild symptoms of mental stress and to aid sleep, but classifies its use as "well-established only for traditional use." Therefore, while linden is widely used for irritability and related symptoms in herbal traditions, robust scientific validation is lacking, and its use is supported primarily by historical and traditional practices rather than modern clinical research.
