Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Avens (Geum urbanum), also known as herb bennet, has a history of use in traditional herbal medicine, especially in Europe. Its roots and aerial parts have historically been employed for a variety of ailments, including digestive complaints, sore throat, and general malaise. In some folk traditions, Avens has been used to "calm the nerves" or as a mild tonic, which may relate to its occasional use for symptoms like irritability. However, documentation of its use specifically for irritability is sparse and mostly anecdotal, found in older herbal texts rather than robust ethnobotanical surveys. There is no substantial scientific evidence—no clinical trials or pharmacological studies—demonstrating efficacy of Avens for irritability or mood disorders. The plant contains tannins and eugenol, which contribute to its astringent and mildly antiseptic properties, but these constituents do not have known direct effects on mood regulation. As such, its use for irritability is best described as a minor and largely unsubstantiated aspect of traditional practice, with very limited evidence even from historical sources. Modern herbal references rarely mention Avens for this purpose, and it is not a common remedy for irritability in contemporary herbalism.
