Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Red Sage (Salvia miltiorrhiza), also known as Danshen, is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb primarily used to promote cardiovascular health, improve circulation, and address conditions such as angina and menstrual disorders. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Red Sage is occasionally included in multi-herbal formulas aimed at calming the mind ("Shen") and supporting sleep, but it is not typically used as a primary or standalone treatment for insomnia. The rationale for its use in such formulas is based on the TCM concept of removing "blood stasis" and supporting heart and liver function, which are sometimes linked to sleep disturbances in TCM theory.

There is very limited direct clinical or preclinical evidence to support the use of Red Sage specifically for insomnia. Most modern scientific studies on Red Sage focus on its cardiovascular, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties rather than its potential sedative or sleep-promoting effects. The evidence that does exist for insomnia is almost entirely anecdotal or rooted in traditional use within broader herbal combinations, rather than isolated or scientifically validated effects. Therefore, its use for insomnia is justified primarily by tradition, with weak supporting evidence.
